SLN-Model United Nations (SLN-MUN) programmes engage students in current world affairs and present an opportunity for young people to explore controversial issues.
Originally established in 2008 in Bradford, SLN-MUN is rapidly gaining recognition across the country. The project has now been established in six local authorities, with four new areas starting their journey in June 2012.
SLN-MUN is a unique model of learning that brings together students from different schools and colleges to form a cohesive group in order to work successfully and effectively as a team.
Youth are at the forefront of global, social, economic and political developments. In addition to their intellectual contribution and their ability to mobilise support, young people bring unique perspectives that need to be taken into account. The progress of our societies is based, among other elements, on each society’s capacity to involve young women and men in building and designing the future. United Nations Youth Unit 1997
The overall aim of SLN-MUN programmes is to engage students – from year 9 to 13 – in current world affairs while providing them with the opportunity to explore the four key questions – ‘Who am I? Who are we? Where do we live? How do we all live together?’ – which form the basis of all SLN teaching.
It is a starting point for students in their understanding of why people or countries are in conflict and how the International community is responding. Most importantly, the programme encourages young people to make a difference as citizens of their local as well as International communities.
SLN offers bespoke training and consultancy to schools, colleges, educational institutions and local authorities who are interested in working with young people and staff to equip them with the skills and confidence to develop models of dialogue and social action.
