Personal journeys
A project called Personal Journeys is aimed at
uniting the young people through a series of art based workshops
that explore common ground such as journeys to and from their
localities, and which also highlight and celebrate the differences
in their everyday experiences. The project covers several POS
within Geography and RE (see below), and explores the connections
between RE, Geography, ICT and Art. The cross-curriculum dimensions
explored through this project are: Identity and Cultural Diversity;
Community Participation; Technology and the Media; Creativity and
Critical Thinking. Over a period of time, a relationship develops
between students at two schools with different populations and in
contrasting localities, through a planned series of joint
activities, relating back to each school’s chosen curriculum
focus.
After preparation in each school, students meet and work
together at an art gallery to produce pictorial maps of their
individual journeys to their shared destination. They also have a
shared visit to a mosque, where they are able to investigate each
other’s perspectives. They capture their personal experiences and
responses to this in
sketch books, followed by visits to each others’ schools, where the
relationship deepens and the focus is on their contrasting
localities. Their personal journeys are represented using felt
making, an age old textile tradition.
