Scholemoor Case Study
The following work is the
result of a survey carried out by children from Clayton C.E. and
Lidget Primary Schools as part of the Education Bradford Schools
Linking Project, in association with the School of Archaeological
Geographical and Environmental Sciences (SAGE) of the University of
Bradford.
The children worked with university
staff over a period of three days; the first held as an
introduction at the National Film and Photography Museum where they
were introduced to the various photographic, equipment and research
skills, whilst being provided with an overview of
the period covering the World Wars.
The next two days were within Scholemoor Cemetery itself carrying
out the survey under quite testing weather conditions at times.
Whilst this was happening other groups were working in Lidget Green
Primary school giving the children opportunities to explore the
periods in question through drama, artefacts, DVD’s and written
sources.
As a final day to the project the
children from Lidget Green came to Clayton CE Primary and learned
how to use on-line military history websites and databases to
research some of the men whose
names they had previously seen in the
survey. Their results have been included in the booklet; a pair of
children worked on each page (one from Lidget Green and one from
Clayton CE).
Over the six month period the project
has run the children have worked as a team to complete their task
and have enjoyed the time they have spent together. Many new
friendships have been formed and the children have had a very
positive approach to each of the different activities they have
undertaken. Each school has brought different experiences,
personalities and cultures to the project and the result can be
seen clearly through their evident hard work and enjoyment of
being together.
