Facing up to the Challenge of Extremism
A Conference to be held at Hinsley Hall,
Leeds on Friday 5 March 2010
To be opened and addressed by Sir Keith Ajegbo
Home Office Adviser and Author of Diversity and Citizenship
2007
Extremism, in its many forms, appears to be gaining ground both
in Britain and throughout the world and has a particular appeal to
marginalised and alienated young people who experience a crisis of
identity and perceive injustice in the established order to which
conventional social and political institutions fail to respond.
This conference sets out to address the causes of such
alienation, challenge the mindset and assumptions of extremist
groups and organisations and offer a range of positive and
practical strategies to help vulnerable individuals and
communities. The conference will provide delegates with the
opportunity to
- Understand the causes of alienation and
confusion about identity
- Respond to issues raised in the recent
government toolkit for schools
- Challenge and support children and vulnerable
young people at risk of extremism
- Develop positive strategies to address
xenophobia and racism
- Observe and learn from practical initiatives to
promote sustainable and effective community cohesion
- Enhance current educational provision to
promote awareness of British identity whilst respecting
diversity
