The film of the first meeting of two primary classes in a neutral space shows details of the linking day including circle games, collaborative activities, lunchtime and the children saying goodbye. The visit builds on identity work covered in advance in class by High Lane Primary School and All Saints CE Primary School, Stockport, including an exchange of information gathered together by the pupils and presented in an ‘identity box’ to the partner school
A Teachers TV video about Year 5 pupils from Thornton Primary, a semi-rural school in West Yorkshire embarking on their first visit to partner school Barkerend Primary, in Bradford city centre. The visit is part of a year-long SLN linking project exploring the theme of identity. Working in pairs the children consider the similarities and differences between each other and their schools, and collaborate to design their ideal school.
Two linked primary schools worked together on a year-long project looking at family heritage, belonging and journeys. Their focus was on the journeys people have taken to get to where they are now. Here the children invite their families to come together to celebrate their work, sharing food and storytelling.
Community Cohesion – Good Practice in Two Schools, Teachers TV
The Teachers TV video documents an ‘in-school linking’ project designed to form links within the school community at Allerton Primary School, Bradford. It highlights SLN identity curriculum activities, a shared assembly with a group of diverse faith representatives leading together and the creative family learning opportunities created by the school to engage with all families. All these activities intentionally develop a cohesive school and spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils. The second half of the video documents the induction process developed by Breeze Hill Secondary School in Oldham.
As part of the ‘Who Do We Think We Are’ SLN project students answered the question ‘What is Britishness? in a question-time debate. Hosted by Bradford College, the entire day was filmed by Panorama and clips were used in a BBC Panorama exploring Britishness. The panel consisted of academics and students including Joyce Miller, Stephen Fairbright, Michelle Sutton and three sixth form students.
A cross-curriculum project held at Rhodesway Secondary School, Bradford using drama, music, art, dance and ideas about citizenship. The video documents the students exploring identity and diversity, and preparing a drama, which they perform at a local theatre. The project grew to become an ‘in-school’ linking project that formed new links with a wider group of students across the whole school.
The Dosti Friendship Project involved working with a professional dancer, to use Bollywood dance as a medium to explore community. This was part of a year-long project, where four primary schools and two secondary schools worked together to develop social and cultural skills through dance, movement, discussion and friendship building. It supported the transition of the primary students and developed empathy in the secondary students involved.
